The NetLogo Dry Erase Board
Desert
Bad description goes here.
Here's an example of something I made in the dry erase board. Paint's overrated. It's also dry in the desert. GET IT?!
Not From Mario
I could live here. I'd build a cottage, go fishing, climb trees, look at the BEAUTIFUL, fluffy clouds.
---
I made all of these sketches using the DryEraseBoard.nlogo program that can found in the freebox file in the class shared file. Give a try! Instructions on how to use it and how to create new markers can be found in the comments of the code.

Definitely Modern Art
Random colors? Organization is overrated. When the meaning isn't explicit, you can construct your own.

Neat -- I wonder if enough people are reading your blog, and checking out your DryEraseBoard program?
ReplyDeleteI will say, though, that in my mind, these are no longer "generative" art. Instead, you created software that allows people to create non-generative art using mouse motions as the tool. What modifications could you make so that their motions produce partially random or unpredictable patterns, but they still have some control over how the image comes out?
You're definitely right - the products of this program are not at all generative. What are changes that could make it generative? Hmmmm... We'd have to introduce an element of random, and we'll need to give the program more control so the human isn't doing all the work. Elements of random might frustrate the would-be painter, but the program could totally disregard where the click is made - placing the color somewhere else nearby. The human wouldn't be able to predict the placement, either. I could probably code this pretty quickly too . . . Who knows, I might try that or something else just to see the results. This was a great question - it really got me thinking about this program when previously the dry erase board was utterly trivial.
